Dubai to transform into bicycle-friendly city

Cycling in Dubai is about to get that much more friendly thanks to upcoming plans from Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

In line with Dubai Vision 2021, Dubai has revealed plans to transform into a bicycle-friendly city – all to promote cycling as a sport and as an environmentally-friendly way of transport.

Dubai authorities will introduce new laws along with safety and security measures to make sure cyclists travelling throughout the city can ride without a worry.

To create a bicycle-friendly city, expect enhanced safety standards, improved awareness of bicycle use, develop standards and policies, create dedicated areas for bicycles and support a bicycle renting culture.

The new initiative is also in line with the objectives of the Dubai Traffic Strategy 2021, aiming to reduce road fatalities, the UAE Energy Strategy 2050’s aim of reducing Dubai’s carbon emissions by 16 percent by 2021 and the goal of Dubai having the world’s lowest carbon footprint.
