King Charles is coming to Dubai

Buckingham Palace has confirmed that King Charles III will travel to Dubai next month.

The British monarch will be in the city on Friday December 1 to attend the opening ceremony of the World Climate Action Summit at Cop28 at Expo City Dubai.

King Charles will attend “at the invitation” of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai and “at the request” of the UK Government, Buckingham Palace has said.

The statement also explains that he will “take the opportunity to have meetings with regional leaders” ahead of the event.

It will be the first time he has attended a COP summit as King but not his first visit to the UAE.

His first trip was in 1989 when he was accompanied by Princess Diana. During their six-day visit, they spent time in Dubai and Abu Dhabi along with visiting Kuwait.

In 1999, he spent seven days touring the Gulf, including Oman and Saudi Arabia and in 2014 he returned to the UAE. He also visited the country in 2015 and 2016.

The COP28 conference will run for 12 days from Monday November 6 until Tuesday December 12 and the decision for Expo City to host seems fitting due to its long-term focus on sustainability.

The climate talks will see representatives of governments or observer organisations, like charities, come together to discuss the planet’s climate crisis.
