Dubai's Comprehensive Cycling Strategy Targets World's Top Bike-Friendly City Title by 2040

Dubai has announced its "Dubai Cycle City 2040" initiative, a groundbreaking plan to position itself as the premier cycling-friendly city globally by 2040. This strategic vision, conceived by URB, envisions a vast expansion of cycling routes, totaling over 1,000 kilometers. A significant component of this plan is THE LOOP, a 93-kilometer cycling highway, which is not only ambitious in scope but also climate-controlled for optimal comfort.

This transformative project aims to redefine urban mobility in Dubai, encouraging residents to adopt cycling and walking as primary modes of transportation to access essential services and locations efficiently. With Dubai's population projected to significantly increase by 2040, this initiative aligns perfectly with the city's commitment to sustainability, including the adoption of electric vehicles in police and taxi fleets.

Baharash Bagherian, CEO of URB, highlights the evolving role of urban planners as agents of change, emphasizing that the Dubai Cycle City 2040 project reflects this dynamic and entrepreneurial spirit. The Loop is designed to foster a healthier mode of transport, ensuring access to key services and locations is achievable within minutes by walking and cycling.

The plan also incorporates the development of community amenities like urban agriculture and social spaces. In comparison, Amsterdam and Copenhagen's cycling infrastructure currently extends 515 km and 545 km, respectively, underscoring Dubai's ambitious goal.

A crucial aspect of this initiative is the integration of cycling infrastructure with residential communities. Developers are actively working to connect their developments directly to the city's cycling tracks, enhancing accessibility and promoting a cycling-centric lifestyle. This approach not only supports sustainable living but also adds value to residential projects by offering residents a healthier, more eco-friendly way of life.

Key areas connected by The Loop include major districts and attractions like DIFC, Downtown, Business Bay, Al Quoz, Dubai Marina, JLT, Expo City, and more, ensuring comprehensive coverage across the city.

Key Features of The Loop Project:

  • Length: 93 kilometers.

  • Powered by 100% renewable energy using kinetic power.

  • Zero emissions transport system.

  • 100% recycled water used for irrigation.

  • Vertical farms for food security.

Under Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's directives, the Dubai 20-minute city concept is being pursued, aiming for residents to reach essential destinations within 20 minutes by foot or bicycle. This aligns with the broader Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, focusing on sustainable urban development, including real estate, urban centers, and urban infrastructure.
